Limb & Lymph Compression Garment Decision Tree
Find the right compression solution based on your limb, stage of lymphedema, and treatment phase.
Step 1: Limb Location
- Upper extremity: arm, forearm, hand
- Lower extremity: foot, calf, thigh
Step 2: Determine Lymphedema Stage
- Stage 0–I (Mild): Reversible, pitting swelling
- Stage II–III (Moderate–Severe): Fibrotic, non-pitting swelling
Step 3: Choose Compression Type
Stage 0–I:
- Circular-knit garments (ready-to-wear sleeves, stockings, gloves)
- Best for mild swelling and daily maintenance
Stage II–III:
- Flat-knit custom garments (stronger containment)
- Inelastic adjustable wraps (easy to apply, high control)
Step 4: What Phase of Treatment Are You In?
Decongestion Phase (Early Treatment):
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
- Bandaging or inelastic wraps
Maintenance Phase:
- Custom flat-knit or off-the-shelf garments
- Maintain reduction achieved during decongestion
Step 5: Special Considerations
- Hand dexterity (can you don/doff easily?)
- Skin condition (fragile skin needs gentler material)
- Compression Class:
- 20–30 mmHg: mild swelling
- 30–60 mmHg: advanced/fibrotic swelling
Step 6: Monitor and Reassess
- Recheck limb measurements every few months
- Refit or resize garments as needed
- Consider accessories (night garments, pumps, footwear)
