Your Guide to Lymphedema After Mastectomy
Your Guide to Lymphedema After Mastectomy
This guide will help you understand, prevent, and manage swelling so you can heal well. We are here to support you on your recovery journey.
Understanding Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a type of swelling that can occur after surgery. Knowing the basics is the first step toward managing your health effectively. Click the topics below to learn more.
Lymphedema is swelling that can happen in your arm, hand, or chest after breast cancer surgery (especially if lymph nodes were removed or you had radiation). It's caused by damage to your body's fluid drainage system (lymphatic system).
We will regularly measure your arm to catch any changes early. It's also very important for you to check your arm and hand daily for any new sensations or swelling. You are a key part of your care team!
Sometimes, a tight, painful cord can form under the skin from your armpit down your arm. This is called "cording." It can limit your arm movement but is a common issue after surgery that can be effectively treated by your therapist.
Signs & Symptoms to Watch For
Knowing what to look for is the first step in early detection. Tell your healthcare team right away if you notice any of these signs.
Heaviness or Tightness
A feeling of fullness or tightness in the arm or chest.
Visible Swelling
Even mild swelling should be reported to your care team.
Clothing Feels Tighter
Rings, watches, or sleeves feel more snug than usual.
Skin Changes
The skin may feel firmer, thicker, or different to the touch.
Stiffness or Less Flexibility
Difficulty moving your arm, wrist, or hand as you normally would.
Your Clinic Treatment Plan
If you need treatment, your plan will be tailored to you. Here are some of the effective therapies we use.
A gentle, specialized massage technique performed by a certified therapist to help redirect fluid and reduce swelling.
Low-level laser therapy that helps reduce pain, inflammation, and scar tissue, potentially improving lymphatic flow.
A non-invasive, gentle therapy using electrostatic vibrations to reduce swelling and soften hardened tissue.
Special elastic tape is applied to the skin to help lift it gently, encouraging fluid drainage and providing support.
This therapy uses an inflatable sleeve on the affected limb connected to a pump. The pump inflates and deflates in a sequential pattern, mimicking muscle contraction to help move fluid out of the limb and reduce swelling.
A personalized program of specific movements designed to help fluid flow, maintain flexibility, and improve strength.
Compression Garments
Compression is key to managing swelling. Your therapist will help you choose the right garments for each stage of your recovery.
Post-Surgery
A soft bra or light garment provides initial comfort and support right after your operation.
Swelling Reduction
Special bandages or adjustable wraps are used to actively bring down any significant swelling.
Long-Term Daily Wear
A fitted sleeve, glove, or stocking worn every day to keep the swelling from returning.
Night Garments
Softer garments can be worn at night to maintain results while you sleep.
