Edema Management After Replacement Surgeries

Managing Edema After Replacement Surgery

Swelling (edema) is common after joint replacement surgery, but some people may benefit from planning for swelling management before surgery. If you have venous insufficiency, a history of cellulitis, chronic leg swelling, lymphedema, or significant swelling after previous surgery, consider discussing an edema-management plan with your healthcare team in advance. Investing in the right compression, mobility support, and rehabilitation strategies may help you manage swelling more effectively and support an optimal recovery after surgery. Explore the products and services available to help you prepare, recover, and get moving again with confidence.

Compression Products

Compression is often a foundational strategy to reduce swelling and support healing.

Compression Stockings

These are typically longer garments, often extending up the leg, used to provide graduated compression. This helps improve circulation and reduce swelling in the entire lower limb, commonly used after knee or hip replacement.

  • Help reduce swelling in the calf, ankle, and foot.
  • Support venous return and prevent blood pooling.
  • Available in various compression levels and lengths.

Compression Socks

Similar to stockings but usually ending below the knee. They are effective for localized swelling in the foot and ankle, or for those who find full stockings uncomfortable.

  • Ideal for foot and ankle swelling.
  • Easier to put on and take off for some individuals.
  • Comfortable for daily wear.

Wraps

Wraps can be incredibly useful if you find it difficult to apply compression stockings, offering an easy-to-handle alternative.

Always consult with your surgeon or therapist about the correct type, size, and compression level of garments for your specific needs.

Therapeutic Services for Edema

Beyond compression, specialized therapies can significantly aid in reducing post-operative swelling and discomfort. Learn more about each service below:

Taping (Kinesiology Taping)

Kinesiology taping involves applying elastic therapeutic tape to the skin. It can help by gently lifting the skin, creating more space for fluid to move and promoting lymphatic drainage. It also provides support without restricting movement, and can help reduce pain and inflammation.

Post-Op Week 1 & 2: Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD is a gentle, specialized massage technique performed by a trained therapist. It's designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging the movement of excess fluid and waste products away from the swollen area. It's particularly effective in the early stages of post-operative edema to reduce initial swelling and bruising.

Post-Op Week 3 Onwards: Deep Oscillation Therapy

Deep Oscillation Therapy is a non-invasive, gentle treatment that uses electrostatic vibrations to create a unique, pleasant deep oscillation effect in the tissue. This helps reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation, and can also help to soften fibrotic (hardened) tissue that might develop later in recovery. It's ideal for ongoing edema management and tissue conditioning.
